Stay Safe This Easter Holiday: Simple Security Checks Before You Leave Home

With the Easter school holidays around the corner, many families are packing bags, planning road trips, and looking forward to a well-deserved break. While you’re organising Easter egg hunts and family time, it’s also the perfect moment to make sure your home stays safe while you’re away.

Fidelity is encouraging residents to take a few simple steps before heading off for the holidays to help keep homes, vehicles, and communities secure.

“Holiday periods are a special time for families, but they can also present opportunities if homes are left unattended,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group. “A few simple checks before you leave can go a long way in giving you peace of mind.”

Top safety tips before you hop into holiday mode:

  1. Keep your plans private
Avoid sharing travel plans or holiday countdowns on social media before or during your trip.
  2. Test your alarm system
Make sure your alarm is working properly well in advance. Check that all doors and windows are locked and secure before you leave.
  3. Lean on your community
Ask a trusted neighbour to collect your post, move bins, or switch lights on occasionally. Small actions like these help create the impression that someone is home.
  4. Light it up
Outdoor lighting and motion sensors can make a big difference. Well-lit homes are far less appealing to opportunistic criminals.
  5. Plan for access if needed
Ensure your security provider can access your property in an emergency. If you’re unsure, speak to them about available options.
  6. Travel smart
Keep valuables out of sight in your vehicle, ideally locked in the boot. Stay alert on the road and park in well-lit, secure areas.
  7. Speak up if something feels off
If you notice anything unusual in your neighbourhood, report it to your security provider or your local SAPS. Looking out for one another strengthens everyone’s safety.

Hattingh adds that if children will be home during the holidays, it’s important they understand basic safety practices: keeping doors locked, not allowing strangers inside, and knowing how to use security systems and emergency contacts.

“Security is a shared responsibility,” she says. “When communities stay aware and support one another, everyone benefits.”

As families enjoy chocolate eggs, long weekends, and time together, a little preparation can help ensure your Easter break is relaxed and worry-free — with only the good surprises waiting for you at home.
