Fidelity ADT is warning business owners to remain alert as criminals ramp up their efforts to exploit every opportunity they can find.
Posing as customers is an old tactic, and small businesses are especially vulnerable. Even when security measures like controlled access doors are in place, staff are often required to open for “customers,” creating an opportunity for criminals to strike.
Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity ADT, says business owners are urged to remain vigilant, ensure CCTV systems are fully operational, and stay alert to any suspicious behaviour. It is also recommended that at least two staff members carry hidden panic buttons at all times. While suspects typically target till money rather than customers, these incidents remain high-risk situations for everyone involved.
Hattingh adds that the likelihood of a robbery turning violent can often be reduced by how both staff and customers respond during the incident.
Safety tips during a robbery:
- Do not resist. Follow instructions to avoid escalating the situation
- Stay calm and regulate your breathing to maintain focus
- Speak slowly and avoid raising your voice
- Avoid sudden movements and communicate your actions clearly
- Only activate alarms if it can be done discreetly (silent panic)
- Avoid direct eye contact that may be perceived as threatening
- Allow suspects time to leave before reacting
- Never attempt to intervene or stop the suspects from escaping.
.
Remaining aware, prepared, and calm can make a critical difference in ensuring the safety of staff and customers.
