Community partnerships play a vital role in enhancing rural safety

A collaborative approach to crime prevention continues to prove effective in strengthening safety across South Africa. In many suburbs and towns, residents, private security providers, community organisations and law enforcement have demonstrated that working together can significantly reduce opportunities for crime.

This collective effort is even more important in rural communities, where farms and smallholdings are often spread across vast areas, making rapid communication and coordinated responses essential.

According to Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group, rural safety depends on strong partnerships between everyone who lives and works in these communities.

“Rural safety is much bigger than any single organisation or community. It requires everyone to play a role. By working together, staying connected and looking out for one another, we can strengthen our collective security and respond more effectively when incidents occur,” says Hattingh.

She offers the following rural safety recommendations:

  • Join your local Farm Watch or rural safety network. If there is no formal structure in your area, engage with your security provider, farming association or the South African Police Service (SAPS) to help establish one. Even a reliable communication network between neighbouring farms can make a critical difference during an emergency
  • Conduct a security assessment of your property. Regularly evaluate your security measures and address any vulnerabilities before they can be exploited
  • Strengthen access control. Ensure all entrances to the property are properly secured and monitored. Maintain perimeter fencing, including electric fencing where appropriate, and install motion detection systems around the home. CCTV cameras positioned to monitor access roads and key areas can provide valuable early warning and evidence should an incident occur
  • Build strong relationships with your neighbours. Regular communication helps create a stronger support network. Check in regularly, particularly with elderly or vulnerable neighbours, and encourage one another to keep security systems well maintained and up to date
  • Remain vigilant. Everyone living or working on a rural property should be alert to suspicious people, unfamiliar vehicles or unusual activity and report concerns immediately.
    .

Hattingh says early reporting and information sharing are among the most effective tools available to rural communities.

“If you notice signs of trespassing or any suspicious or unusual activity on your property, notify your neighbours, your Farm Watch and the police as soon as possible. The quicker information is shared, the greater the opportunity to prevent crime or assist in apprehending suspects.”

She concludes that sustainable rural safety depends on ongoing cooperation between communities and security partners.

“Security is a shared responsibility. By working together, sharing information and responding proactively to potential risks, communities can deter criminal activity, strengthen prevention efforts and create safer environments for everyone who lives and works in rural areas.”
