A hijacking victim was recently rescued and his vehicle recovered thanks to the vigilance of a local security company.
“Just before 15h00 on Monday the 23rd January, our Specialised Intervention Unit (SIU) were patrolling the Mayville area when they noticed a Hyundai driving suspiciously at high speed,” says Charnel Hattingh, Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group.
The SIU members followed the suspicious vehicle and noted one driver and two back seat occupants. “The one passenger at the back of the vehicle appeared to look very nervous and uncomfortable and the driver of the vehicle panicked when he discovered that he was being followed by our team,” adds Hattingh.
A high-speed chase ended when the driver of the hijacked vehicle crashed into a pole in Newlands.
“Our team managed to apprehend one of the suspects but unfortunately the second suspect got away. A 9mm firearm was recovered from the vehicle and handed to members of the Mayville SAPS,” says Hattingh.
Further investigation revealed that the victim had taken his wife to a store in Brickfield Road and was waiting for his wife in the vehicle when he was approached by two armed men who forced him into the back seat of the car before driving off.
“Well done to our SIU team for coming to the rescue of this hijacking victim. Thanks to their vigilance they ultimately kept the victim safe and protected him from further harm.”
