Human Rights Day: Safety and Security Begin With All of Us

South Africans commemorate Human Rights Day on 21 March 2026. The South African Bill of Rights affirms that everyone has the right to freedom and security of the person, including the right to live free from harm and to feel safe in their daily lives.

While safety is a fundamental right, it is also a shared responsibility—one that is strengthened when individuals, families and communities work together to look out for one another.

Fidelity Services Group’s Group Head of Marketing and Communications, Charnel Hattingh, says that building safer communities starts with everyday actions.

“Safety and security are not only about systems and responses—it’s about people. When communities are connected, informed and aware, they become stronger and more resilient. Looking out for your neighbour, sharing information and being mindful of your surroundings can make a meaningful difference,” she says.

Hattingh explains that being security conscious is not about fear, but about awareness and care.

“Simple, consistent habits can go a long way in creating a safer environment. Staying informed, communicating with those around you and taking small preventative steps helps reduce risk—not only for yourself, but for others as well.”

Fidelity encourages residents to adopt the following practical tips to help promote safety and security this Human Rights Month:

  1. Be mindful of access to your property
Always verify who is requesting entry and ensure that everyone in your household follows the same approach. A consistent and cautious mindset helps prevent unnecessary risks.
  2. Have a shared emergency plan
Discuss and agree on a plan with your family or household so that everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. Being prepared helps reduce panic and enables a quicker, more coordinated response.
  3. Stay aware in public spaces
Being conscious of your surroundings and keeping valuables out of sight can reduce the likelihood of becoming a target. Awareness is a simple but powerful tool.
  4. Use your security measures effectively
Whether it’s an alarm system, perimeter protection or community patrols, ensure these are used consistently and maintained regularly. These measures work best when supported by informed and engaged residents.

Hattingh also highlights the importance of communication within communities:

“Sharing information, reporting concerns and supporting one another all contribute to a safer environment. When people are connected and proactive, it becomes much harder for criminal activity to go unnoticed.”

She concludes:

“This Human Rights Month, let’s remember that safety begins with each of us—but it is strengthened when we stand together. By fostering a culture of awareness, responsibility and care, we can help create communities where everyone feels safer.”
