CCTV security cameras fulfil two roles. They act as a deterrent to would-be criminals, and they also help in providing information that is useful in responding to a crime. This is what happened in Capri this week (Thursday 12 May 2022) when two suspects were arrested, after they broke into a home in the area.
“A homeowner woke up on Thursday morning to discover that his garage door had been forced open. Several items were stolen. The homeowner asked his neighbour to see if the CCTV security system on his property perhaps captured any visuals of the alleged break-in,” says Mr Jade Hanning, Western Cape General Manager for Fidelity ADT. “The footage provided a clear picture of the suspects who broke into the garage.”
The neighbour later that morning saw two men in the neighbourhood who matched the description, and he saw them disappear into a bushy area and later emerge with a toolbox in their possession.
“He quickly realised that these were probably the two men who had earlier burgled his neighbour’s property and pressed the panic alarm. He explained to our monitoring centre team what had happened to his neighbour and what he had observed, and our armed response officers were sent to investigate,” says Hanning.
The suspects were located and detained, before they were handed over into police custody. A case of housebreaking and theft was opened against them with Fish Hoek SAPS.
“I want to thank the neighbour who used his own CCTV system to help in tracking down these suspects. Capri can be an even safer suburb if we all look after one another,” says Hanning.
