A suspect was apprehended shortly after he and an accomplice allegedly robbed a student at knifepoint.
“We received a panic alarm signal from a student residence on Govan Mbeki street (on Thursday 17 September 2020 at around 20h37) and sent an armed response officer to investigate,” says Ryan Britz, Port Elizabeth branch manager for Fidelity ADT. “When Officer Rashied Johannes arrived at the residence, he was told that a student had just been robbed by two unknown knife-wielding men.”
Another armed response officer, Gary Burgins, soon arrived to assist Johannes in a search for the two suspects.
“Our officers were given a detailed description of the two, and started a search of the area. They soon encountered two men that matched the description and pursued them but one managed to evade apprehension. His accomplice was handed over into the custody of Humewood police and he was positively identified by the student as being one of the men who had committed the robbery.
“We are proud of our officers in making this arrest, which was greatly helped by the alarm being raised quickly and by them having a detailed description of the suspects. If you find yourself the victim of a robbery, contact the police or your security provider as soon as you can. An accurate description of an assailant also helps us in finding them and bringing them to justice,” says Britz.
