A suspect was arrested in Plettenberg Bay this week (Monday 18 January 2021) after he and a number of accomplices allegedly tried to burgle homes in the area.
“Our officers received a WhatsApp alert about a burglary in process along Beachyhead Drive around 18h37 and went to investigate. They were also given a description of the alleged suspect,” says Pieter Meiring, Garden Route branch manager for Fidelity ADT. “While our officers were on their way to the address, they received a second notification of another burglary in progress at a different house along that same street.”
Meiring says the responding officers at that point realised they needed to coordinate their response, and decided to approach the street from different directions in an effort to cordon off the area and prevent any suspects from getting away. They also called in the assistance of the Plettenberg Bay Neighbourhood Watch.
“One of the alleged burglars was successfully apprehended, while his alleged accomplices managed to escape into nearby bushes where they dumped the items they were trying to steal. The items have been returned to its lawful owner and the suspect was handed over into the custody of Plettenberg Bay SAPS.
“Well done to everyone involved in this coordinated team effort. This is exactly how we will keep Plett safe from crime this year,” says Meiring.
