Youth Month: Empowering and protecting today’s youth

As South Africa commemorates Youth Month, now is the ideal time to reinforce the importance of safety and security, particularly among teenagers and young adults who are often more vulnerable to crime and harmful influences.

“June is a month in which we honour the bravery and sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 in shaping the future of South Africa. While we remember the past, we must also focus on building a safer and more secure future for the next generation,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group.

Parents, guardians, educators, and communities all have an important role to play in teaching young people how to stay safe and respond appropriately in difficult situations. Creating an environment where children and teenagers feel comfortable discussing their fears, concerns, and experiences is essential.

“Young people need to know that there are trustworthy adults who are willing and able to help them in times of need. Do your children know how to contact the SAPS or Law Enforcement in an emergency? Have you shown them how to identify a security officer or safe point in a busy public space if they become separated from family or friends? Practising these scenarios can help build confidence and preparedness. We all share a responsibility to equip today’s youth with the knowledge and tools they need for a safer tomorrow,” adds Hattingh.

Fidelity Services Group offers the following safety tips for Youth Month:

  • Monitor your child or teenager’s social media activity to help protect them from online predators, scams, and bullying
  • Educate young people about the dangers associated with drugs and substance abuse
  • Discourage the carrying of any weapons or dangerous objects
  • Promote a zero-tolerance approach to violence, bullying, and drug use
  • Ensure children and teenagers know who to contact in the event of an emergency
  • Encourage open and honest communication so young people feel comfortable reporting abuse, threats, or unsafe situations.
    .

This Youth Month, let us all play a meaningful role in empowering young people to make informed decisions, stay safe, and contribute positively to the future of South Africa.
