Understanding the Difference between Neighbourhood Watch and Armed Response Services

When it comes to ensuring the safety of your home and loved ones, choosing the right security options is crucial. However, it’s not just about finding the most affordable service.

Selecting a new security provider can be a daunting task if you haven’t figured out what you’re looking for.

Charnel Hattingh, Group head of Marketing and Communications for Fidelity ADT, says there is a common misconception among residents regarding the roles and functions of Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) groups and professional armed response companies.

Many residents mistakenly believe that NHW provides the same level of security as a registered armed response company, leading to confusion and potential gaps in community safety

She says there are four key differences:

Key Differences:

  1. Legal Status and Regulation:
    • Security Company: Must be registered and comply with PSIRA regulations, meeting specific licensing, training, and operational standards.
    • Neighbourhood Watch: Operates on a voluntary basis without formal registration or compliance with security regulations.
  2. Professionalism and Training:
    • Security Company: Employs trained and often armed security officers who undergo professional training and certification.
    • Neighbourhood Watch: Composed of community volunteers who are not professionally trained in security measures and are not armed.
  3. Scope of Services:
    • Security Company: Provides armed response, alarm systems, CCTV monitoring, and physical patrols, with the capability to respond to incidents.
    • Neighbourhood Watch: Focuses on observation and reporting suspicious activities to local law enforcement and works hand in hand with their security company to alert them of any problem areas.
  4. Response and Equipment:
    • Security Company: Equipped with security equipment like alarms, surveillance cameras, and vehicles, with a structured response system.
    • Neighbourhood Watch: Relies on personal vigilance and communication, with limited response capabilities.

While Neighbourhood Watch groups play a vital role in community safety through vigilance and reporting, they do not provide all the regulated security services that a registered armed response company offers. Understanding these differences is crucial for residents to make informed decisions about their security needs.

“The best solution is a hybrid one where the area has a strong security provider backed by a proactive neighbourhood watch group. Doing your homework and considering all of these factors will help you find the best option to keep you and your loved ones safe.”
