Wahl Bartmann, Group CEO at Fidelity Services Group, says it can be overwhelming when shopping for a security system. It is therefore helpful to know what questions to ask, bearing in mind that the system you install is only as reliable as the security company that backs it.
Are their officers properly trained and equipped?
“This is crucial in the case of an emergency; a security provider that deploys efficient and well-trained officers should be a top priority,” advises Bartmann.
Ask what training the company’s response officers receive and how they are equipped to respond to emergencies. This includes the protective equipment they carry, the vehicles they use, and the procedures they follow when responding to an incident. Regular training and appropriate equipment are important considerations when assessing a provider’s ability to protect its customers and officers.
Is the security company compliant?
Ask the company to provide proof of its registration with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA). For alarm installation and monitoring services, also ask about relevant South African Intruder Detection Services Association (SAIDSA) approval. Rather than relying on assurances alone, consumers should request and verify the credentials relevant to the services being offered.
“The onus lies with the public to ask the relevant questions before entering into any agreement, and to be on the lookout for any potential ‘fly-by-night’ security providers,” says Bartmann.
What are you looking for?
Start by identifying what you need to protect and where your property may be vulnerable. A security provider should help you assess these needs and recommend a suitable combination of equipment and services. CCTV cameras, remote alarm access and mobile panic buttons are among the options available, but the focus should be on how these features support your security needs and work together. “Technology available on your smartphone can help you to arm or disarm your system remotely and view your property through security cameras, aside from receiving a notification when your alarm is set off,” explains Bartmann.
What is the cost?
Costs depend on factors such as the size of the premises, the equipment selected, and the monitoring and response services included. Ask for a clear breakdown of installation fees, monthly charges, and any additional costs, including maintenance or callouts. It is also important to understand the contract period, any annual increases, and cancellation terms. When comparing quotations, check that you are comparing the same level of service. “There is a big difference between merely offering a monitoring service as opposed to a full armed response service. Ask exactly what you will get for your money,” says Bartmann.
Bartmann outlines some of the features of a solid security system:
- Remote access: Enables you to monitor your system from a mobile device, which is especially helpful if you’re away from home as it keeps you informed about any suspicious activity.
. - Motion detectors and door/window sensors: These devices detect movement or the opening of doors and windows and trigger an alert through the alarm system.
. - Remote and fixed panic buttons: Allow you to call for help quickly in an emergency. Ask which response services are included and how alerts are handled.
. - All-day security monitoring: A professional monitoring centre receives alerts from your connected security system and coordinates the appropriate response. Ask which devices can be monitored, how alerts are verified and what happens once an alarm is received.
.
He concludes that a reputable security company will have the expertise to ensure the installation of your security system is done professionally and that each component of the system is in the right place and ready to perform its job.
“A home or business security system is not a nice-to-have; it’s an investment into your safety and security and that of your family, employees and property. Doing your homework can help you choose a security solution that fits your needs and budget and gives you greater peace of mind.”
