With spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to give your home security system a seasonal check-up.

As winter draws to a close, homeowners are encouraged to look beyond traditional spring cleaning and include their security systems in their seasonal maintenance routine. Changes in weather, vegetation and the physical environment around a property can all affect the effectiveness of security measures.

“As a homeowner, it is important to keep track of how changing weather conditions can affect different parts of your home, including your security system. While spring cleaning is often associated with decluttering, gardening and general home maintenance, security should also form part of your seasonal checklist,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group.

Hattingh recommends that homeowners include the following checks in their seasonal security routine:

Test your alarm system: Regularly test your alarm to ensure that it is working correctly when you need it most. A professional system check is also recommended, much like servicing your vehicle. Your security provider can assess your system and advise whether any components need to be repaired, replaced or upgraded as technology continues to evolve.

Inspect outdoor cameras and sensors: CCTV cameras, movement detectors and other outdoor security devices are exposed to the elements and can be affected by changing weather conditions. Check that cameras are clean, correctly positioned and functioning properly. Heavy rainfall, strong winds or other adverse weather may also have caused damage that needs attention.

Review your property’s physical layout: Walk around your property and assess your garden and surrounding areas. Overgrown trees, shrubs and plants can obstruct CCTV cameras, reduce visibility or interfere with outdoor movement sensors. Trimming vegetation can help maintain clear sightlines and ensure your security equipment operates effectively.

Check your electric fence: Inspect your electric fence for any visible damage, particularly after periods of strong wind or storms. Fallen branches and trees can damage the fence, while temperature changes can affect the tensioning and potentially contribute to false alarms. Any issues should be assessed and repaired by a qualified professional.

Look for signs of weather-related damage: If your area has recently experienced heavy rain, strong winds or storms, inspect your security infrastructure for possible damage. This includes electric fencing, beams, cameras, gates, access-control equipment and other outdoor security devices.
