Shopping should be an enjoyable experience, but busy retail environments can also create opportunities for criminals looking for easy targets. Whether shopping at a mall, shopping centre or retail precinct, remaining alert and aware of your surroundings is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime.

According to Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group, vigilance remains your best defence.

“We urge shoppers to remain alert whenever they visit malls or shopping centres. Criminals are opportunistic and often look for moments when people are distracted, carrying valuable purchases or simply not paying attention to their surroundings. A few simple safety habits can go a long way in protecting both you and your belongings.”

Fidelity Services Group highlights some of the most common shopping safety mistakes and how to avoid them:

• Allowing distractions to take your attention away. Looking at your phone, wearing headphones or becoming engrossed in conversations can reduce your awareness of your surroundings and make you an easier target for thieves or scammers
• Failing to secure your vehicle. Always double-check that your vehicle is locked and that all windows are closed before leaving it. Visible valuables or shopping bags left inside can attract opportunistic criminals
• Displaying expensive jewellery or accessories. High-value watches, jewellery and designer accessories can attract unwanted attention and make you a target for robbery
• Carrying large amounts of cash. Whenever possible, use secure electronic payment methods. Crowded stores, supermarkets and shopping centres are common hunting grounds for pickpockets and bag snatchers
• Leaving bags unattended or unsecured. Keep handbags and backpacks zipped closed and close to your body at all times. Never leave a handbag, purse or wallet unattended or in a shopping trolley.

Hattingh says shoppers withdrawing large amounts of cash should take additional precautions.

“If you need to withdraw a significant amount of cash, ask someone you trust to accompany you. They can help keep watch while you are at the ATM and remain alert for any suspicious individuals or vehicles as you travel home. If you can avoid carrying large sums of cash altogether, electronic payments remain the safer option.”

She adds that personal safety should remain a priority after leaving the shopping centre.

“Before exiting the mall, have your vehicle keys ready so you can enter your vehicle quickly without searching through your handbag or shopping bags. Keep your handbag securely in your possession as you walk to your vehicle. If someone attempts to snatch your bag, do not resist. Your belongings can be replaced—your safety cannot.”

Whenever possible, shoppers are encouraged to complete their shopping during daylight hours or during busy trading periods when more people and security personnel are present. Parking in well-lit, busy areas and remaining aware of your surroundings can significantly reduce your risk.
